Employment discrimination remains an egregious issue in the United States, one disproportionately affecting Black women. Black females face the most discrimination in the labor market, including being the first to be let go, discrimination in wages, and disparities in promotions to higher positions of authority, especially when compared to White men. According to government statistics, this is true across the board in all occupations and includes amongst workers who have attained higher degrees from Bachelors and upward.
Exacerbated Bias When Black-plus-Female Demographics
The wage gap between women and men, and between Black and White employees, significantly displays just how much work remains to be done huge to eliminate discrimination against workers based on their sex and race. There is an intensified disparity of treatment of Black women workers in particular. It is the exacerbating bias that arises when it is a Black-plus-female demographic, where there is an intersection of bias against the Black race and bias against the female sex. Workers in this subgroup experience more severe systemic and individual discrimination than they would based on their sex or race alone.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, even when controlling for education and experience, Black women earn less than White men. In 2021, Black women who worked full-time year-round with a bachelor's degree earned 62.5 cents for every dollar earned by White men. In 2023, Black women working full-time year-round earned just 69 cents for every dollar earned by White men. Systemic racism and sexism persists in the workplaces and disproportionately affects Black women. See NJ Sex Discrimination Attorney, I’m a Female Executive Unfairly Evaluated.
Despite their significant contributions to the workforce, Black women face individual biases and systemic barriers resulting in some of the most pronounced disparities in employment among all demographic groups.
Discrimination in Promotions and Pay Awards at Corporate Levels
Black women are the least likely to be promoted to positions of authority. The combined effects of race and sex discrimination faced by Black women can lead to initial discrimination in the awarding of promotions, then when promoted, being paid at a rate equivalent to other demographics. Black women at all levels, including corporate managers, may be paid significantly less than situated White, Hispanic, Asian or male counterparts. See New Jersey Race Discrimination Lawyer.
